On Saturday 18th March, Clapgate choir club took part in a concert held at Morley Town Hall. Mrs Wilson who attended the event with In Harmony said “I had the pleasure of attending the Opera North choir concert with the children from year 5/6. They were incredible, so well behaved and a credit to their parents. I had nothing but positive praise about them. They sang their hearts out and made me smile with pride. Well done guys, I can’t wait to attend the next one.” Well done and a big achievement for our choir club!
We are thrilled to announce that Clapgate has been successful in achieving Artsmark Gold Award in recognition of our fantastic arts provision! This is an amazing achievement to be celebrated and recognises the hard work of our children, staff and governors. The Artsmark Award is the only creative quality standard for schools and educational settings accredited by Arts Council England. This significant award shows a real commitment to arts and cultural education and ensures a curriculum of breadth and balance.
We are extremely proud of everything that has been achieved so far and look forward to developing the arts ( art, music, drama and dance) further to build on the success of our Artsmark Gold Award. A huge well done to all our pupils, staff and governors for their hard work promoting and participating in the arts. Finally, a big thank you to our parents and carers for your support of our arts events and activities.
Each half term, the children will showcase their talents by performing in front of their parents and teachers. This Christmas, the children performed for the first time. Everyone was so proud of the children and we couldn’t believe what they had achieved in such a short period of time! LKS2 showcased the skills that they have achieved in their string and choir sessions whilst UKS2 performed songs on their brass and string instruments. The Clapgate choir also sang and there wasn’t a dry eye in the hall! KS1 have also put together some songs and the videos have been sent home to parents. Well done!
We have now started the UKS2 Instrumental Club. We were overwhelmed with the number of children who requested a place. We now have 40 children on the waiting list! They will be exploring opera and how a musician’s career pathway might look like. They will be creating music to an opera as an orchestra. Some of the children have opted for a position on strings whilst the rest are on brass. We are really excited to see their progress and we look forward to their first live performance!
Opera North’s In Harmony programme have started a choir for years 5 and 6.
Through the In Harmony choir students will have the opportunity to learn and sing different pieces of music together. They will build on the musicianship and instrumental lessons that they have with the rest of their class and transfer this to singing. They will also have the chance to perform with other In Harmony schools and take part in concerts. The first will be at Christmas with more details on the way. We are also excited to share that the students will also have the opportunity to audition for the Opera North Youth Company and for Opera North productions. This will mean that they will be part of a much bigger singing community.
If your child would like to join the choir then please ring the school office. The choir will take place on Wednesdays from 3.20-4.20pm, at school.
We have partnered with Opera North who bring expert music teachers to our school to provide all our children with a high-quality music curriculum. Reception and KS1 are receiving musicianship lessons. These will equip the children with the basics they need to read, write and perform music. This will then prepare them for their lessons in KS2 which will consist of every child having the opportunity to learn an instrument. For year 3 and 4 this will be a string instrument and for year 5 and 6 it will be either a string instrument or a brass instrument. Opera North will be providing the children with the instruments and once they are ready to start practising at home, they will be allowed to bring them to and from school. Year 5 and 6 pupils can join an after school club which provides them with opportunities for extra practise.
Year 3 & 4 pupils will also have choir sessions weekly and year 5 & 6 pupils have the opportunity to join the In Harmony choir in a new after school club. Through the In Harmony choir students will have the opportunity to learn and sing different pieces of music together. They will build on the musicianship and instrumental lessons that they have with the rest of their class and transfer this to singing. They will also have the chance to perform with other In Harmony schools and take part in concerts. We are also excited to share that the students will also have the opportunity to audition for the Opera North Youth Company and for Opera North productions. This will mean that they will be part of a much bigger singing community.
Evidence from research and from other schools we have visited shows that a high-quality music curriculum can have a positive impact well beyond the children’s musical ability- it can improve wellbeing, confidence, concentration, speaking and listening skills, attendance and academic attainment.
During the academic year of 2021/2022, the government introduced a new, optional curriculum for music. This is called the Model Music Curriculum and focuses on the following areas:
The InHarmony team, who start at Clapgate in September 2022, will use this curriculum to ensure that the children are keeping up to date with the government expectations. Children in KS2 will be using some of the guidance from KS1 to make sure that they have the basics needed to thrive in the above areas.
