2VW Gymnastics

2VW have made incredible progress in their gymnastics this half term. We have worked on rolls (including specialising in forward rolls!), paired balances, exploring the vault, travelling along benches and even cartwheels on the mats! The children have been fantastic at listening to feedback to develop their skills as well as taking on the role of being a “mini teacher” and helping their friends improve their moves using a skill card for the forward roll! At the end of the unit, the children used their creativity to build & develop their own routine featuring a balance, roll, jump & travel in groups of 2 or 3. They then performed these routines to the class and received peer feedback. Super gymnasts!

What The Student Says

"I feel proud that I can now do a forward roll"

"I loved jumping off the big vault"

"I can do a squat on the vault!"

"I've liked being a mini-teacher and telling my friends how to get even better"

"I felt nervous to show my routine but I feel proud of myself now"

What knowledge and skills have been developed?

Children have been able to-

-Copy, explore & repeat simple gymnastics moves such as the log roll & tuck roll, stretch & star jump and individual balances on larger body parts

-Link moves together to create a routine

-Explore & perform different skills on the vault & benches

-Comment on the differences between own & others' performances

-Take part in a safe gymnastics warm up including stretches for our muscles

-Work together in teams and communicate ideas with others

What the Teacher says

The children have been a joy to teach gymnastics to- they have all been so keen to develop their skills and they have shown brilliant determination throughout. They have worked well with one another and enjoyed being challenged especially on the vault to try squat on with some progressing further and managing squat through! Their routines were fab and they brought together everything they have learnt this term to show off their fantastic gymnastics skills!
