Year 1 – Writing
Project Overview
As part of our writing this half term, we have been focusing on the book “Stanley’s Stick”. Taking inspiration from this story we went on our own stick hunt. The children picked themselves a stick and thought carefully about why it was perfect for them.
We wrote descriptions of our sticks and then spent the week playing with our sticks in different areas of the classroom. Using our imagination, we drew pictures of what we wanted our stick to be if it could be anything in the world. We then wrote captions to match these pictures. To conclude our unit we wrote letters to Stanley explaining what we had been doing with our sticks.
What The Student Says
“ We told our friends about our stick and they got to be anything we wanted.”
“I liked finding my own stick, because I like sticks.”
“All our sticks were different and this made it more interesting.”
“I liked using my imagination and thinking of my own ideas.”

What The Teacher Says
“I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching this unit and watching the children really excel in their writing. The children have all be really engaged with this topic and it has been lovely to see the children using their imagination to turn their sticks into lots of different things. The children have produced some excellent writing and they should be really proud of their work. I am hugely proud of them.”
