Year 6 Design and Technology – Design and make a cushion

In Design and Technology year 6 have designed and made a cushion for their final textile project. They looked at a variety of cushion designs and considered the difference between a cushion and a pillow. They thought about any additional design features that their cushion may have like a pocket to hold small items or a handle to enable the cushion to be carried around. The children considered the colour scheme for their cushion and thought about different stitches that they could use to enhance their design. They practised and learnt how to do blanket stitch (an edging stitch) which was perfect for combining two pieces of fabric together. Finally, they thought about the ‘user’ (who the cushion was being made for). Was it for themselves, a member of their family or as a gift for a friend? We had some fantastic designs which were personal to the children and some cushions even had a design on the front and back! Year 6 worked really hard on this textile project and have made a lasting product which will make a lovely keepsake at the end of their primary school life.

What The Student Says

"I have really enjoyed making my cushion and I feel proud of what it looks like. My design is colourful and bold and I am going to give it to my dad as a gift. I know he will like it as I have made it on a football theme. I found threading my needle tricky to begin with but I got better at it. I had to practise blanket stitch and it was difficult at first but it looks great on the edge of my cushion!" Year 6 pupil

What knowledge and skills have been developed?

Drawing and cutting fabric accurately following design ideas. Threading a needle independently. Pinning fabric in place. Sewing accurately, keeping stitches the right size and shape. Using running and blanket stitch accurately on the right parts of the cushion. Selecting chosen materials following design ideas.

What the Teacher says

"Year 6 have worked incredibly hard on their textile, cushion project. They have brought their design ideas from a plan in their D&T book to a finished and professional product that they should feel proud of. The children have learnt new skills along the way including drawing and cutting fabric accurately, learning to pin, thread a needle and creating stitching of the right size. They have built up their resilience levels as things didn't always go to plan and have experienced what it is like to be a real designer when things do not always work the first time. The finished cushions are colourful with some lovely, eye catching designs which have a real purpose and an intended user. Well done year 6!" Miss Webster
