Year 1- Science- Our Senses

In Year 1 Science, we have been learning all about our five senses and how they help us understand the world around us. We began by revisiting the different parts of the body and talking about what each one is used for, helping us link body parts to the senses they belong to. After this, we headed outside for a senses walk, where we focused carefully on what we could see, hear, and feel in our environment. Back in the classroom, we took part in an exciting carousel of activities designed to put each sense to the test. We went on a listening walk, explored a variety of different smells, and felt a range of materials, describing their textures in detail. One of our favourite tasks was using our senses to sort sweets into different categories—especially when we used our sense of taste!

To finish our learning, we enjoyed a fantastic trip to Eureka, where we explored our five senses through hands-on, interactive exhibits. The highlight of the day was watching a special senses show, which helped us understand even more about how our senses work together. It has been a fun and fascinating topic for everyone in Year 1!

What The Student Says

“I liked going on the senses walk because I could hear birds and cars.”

“My favourite was tasting the sweets. They were yummy!”

"We use our nose to smell things."

"Eureka was so fun! It was birthday and they sang happy birthday."

"Mmmmm, they taste yummy. It is so sweek."

What knowledge and skills have been developed?

Observing closely using simple equipment

Describing things using words linked to the senses

Sorting and grouping objects based on what they look, smell, feel, sound or taste like

Asking and answering questions about what they notice

Listening carefully during walks, activities and the museum visit

Working together and taking turns during carousel activities

Using scientific vocabulary such as taste, smell, texture, hear, and touch

Making simple predictions (e.g. guessing smells or textures)

Exploring safely and following instructions during practical tasks

Building confidence in sharing ideas and talking about their learning

What the Teacher says

Year 1 have shown fantastic enthusiasm and curiosity during our topic on the five senses. The children engaged brilliantly in all activities, from exploring the outdoors to investigating different smells, textures, and sounds in the classroom. Their favourite—tasting and sorting sweets—was a great example of how confidently they applied their learning. Our trip to Eureka was a wonderful opportunity for them to deepen their understanding, and they represented the school beautifully. Well done, Year 1! I am very proud of the progress you have made and the excitement you brought to every lesson.
