Year 5- Outdoor Learning

Last half term, Year 5 had lots of fun during their weekly outdoor learning lessons. 5NP and 5LK now enjoy their outdoor lessons together and this has helped them to develop their social skills. Over this half term, the children explored science, art and practical skills in a hands-on environment. Around the campfire, they investigated changes of state by heating chocolate, eggs, cheese, play dough and wax, observing how materials melted, softened or solidified as temperatures changed. The children also expressed their creativity through outdoor art activities inspired by nature, and applied their design and problem-solving skills by making and testing paper aeroplanes. In addition, they spent time caring for and observing chickens, learning about animal needs and responsibility. The experience combined curiosity, teamwork and real-world learning in an exciting outdoor setting.

What The Student Says

“I really liked the campfire because we got to see the chocolate and wax melt—it was cool to watch how things change when they get hot, and we all worked together to figure it out.” Pupil from 5LK

“I enjoyed making art outside and creating my paper aeroplane. It was fun testing it with my friends and helping each other make them better.” Pupil from 5LK

“Looking after the chickens was my favourite part because we learned how to care for them properly and I liked working as a team to make sure they were safe and happy.” Pupil from 5NP

“It was great spending time with everyone in Year 5. We all helped each other, shared ideas and worked together really well in every activity.” Pupil 5NP

What the Teacher says

It was wonderful to see the Year 5 children engaging so enthusiastically in their outdoor learning experience. They demonstrated great curiosity during the campfire science activity, confidently exploring changes of state using a range of materials such as chocolate, eggs, cheese, play dough and wax. The children showed creativity and focus in their art work and enjoyed designing and testing their paper aeroplanes, applying problem-solving skills effectively.

Miss Korenika

It was particularly lovely to see the children working so well together as a year group, supporting one another, sharing ideas and building positive relationships throughout the day.
