Year 3 – Design & Technology

This term in Design and Technology, Year 3 have focused on designing and making healthy sandwiches. Building on their prior learning about food preparation and healthy eating, the children explored how to create a sandwich that is both nutritious and appealing.

The children began by discussing what makes a healthy, balanced meal, linking their ideas to the Eatwell plate. They then generated their own sandwich ideas, thinking carefully about taste, nutrition, and appearance.

After designing their sandwiches, the children prepared and combined ingredients safely, using a range of utensils and equipment. To celebrate their hard work, Year 3 enjoyed a picnic, where they tasted and evaluated their delicious sandwiches!

What The Student Says

"I loved tasting the different ingredients before designing my sandwich. I even tried food that I thought I didn't like!"

"I found out that I really like brown bread, so I will choose this next time I have a sandwich."

"I cut my sandwich into triangles, just like they do in the shops."

"The picnic was so fun, and my sandwich was healthy and yummy!"

What knowledge and skills have been developed?

Year 3 have developed key Design and Technology skills throughout this unit:

  • Designing:
The children generated and clarified ideas through discussion, developing design criteria for creating an appealing, healthy sandwich. They communicated their ideas through annotated sketches.
  • Making:
They then planned the main stages of making their sandwich, including selecting ingredients, utensils, and equipment. They learned how to safely prepare and combine ingredients, making thoughtful choices based on sensory characteristics.
  • Evaluating:
The children taste-tested different ingredients and their final sandwiches, assessing taste, texture, and appearance. They recorded their ideas, reflected on how well their product met the design criteria, and listened to others' views.
  • Technical Knowledge and Understanding:
Children developed their understanding of how to use equipment safely and effectively. They explored a range of fresh ingredients and discussed where food comes from (grown, reared, or caught). They also used appropriate technical and sensory vocabulary when describing their products.

What the Teacher says

Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed this practical unit and have shown fantastic enthusiasm throughout. They worked thoughtfully when designing their sandwiches and demonstrated great care when preparing their ingredients.

It was particularly lovely to see the children confidently discussing their ideas using new vocabulary and reflecting on their work during the evaluation process. The picnic was a highlight, where everyone had the opportunity to share and celebrate their creations.

The sandwiches were delicious, and the children should be very proud of their creativity and effort!
