Year 6 – Writing

Our writing stimulus for the summer term was On the Origin of Species. The text introduced Charles Darwin, a famous scientist and naturalist who travelled to many places, including the Galápagos Islands, studying plants, animals, fossils and geology. Through his observations, Darwin noticed that living things change over time and adapt to their environments. These discoveries led him to develop the theory of evolution by natural selection.

Throughout the term, we completed two pieces of writing. The first was a discovery narrative, which allowed the children to describe Darwin’s exciting journey and scientific discoveries alongside his assistant. The second was an explanation text, where the children used their creativity to invent, classify and describe their own newly discovered species.

In both pieces, the children worked hard to incorporate Year 6 writing features, demonstrating their ability to use ambitious vocabulary, varied sentence structures and a high standard of punctuation.

"These pieces of writing provided an excellent opportunity for the children to consolidate the skills they have developed throughout Key Stage 2. They used expanded noun phrases to create detailed descriptions that brought their ideas to life and helped the reader build a clear picture in their mind. The children also demonstrated their understanding of more advanced grammatical features, including relative clauses and semi-colons, to create varied and engaging sentences. Ambitious vocabulary, technical language, synonyms and antonyms were used effectively throughout both their fiction and non-fiction writing, adding depth, precision and interest to their work."
