This half term the children have completed their SATS. The children have worked extremely hard and we finished off the month of May with a trip to our capital city - London. The children absolutely loved it and all behaved impeccably!! We started off our trip nice and early at 7.15am, went down on a coach and stopped off at Hyde Park. From there we went to all of the top tourist places such as Buckingham Palace, Houses of parliament, Downing street and the London Eye. The children then went and spent their money in Leicester Square and finished off with tea at Pizza Hut. After a long day of walking, we rested our feet at the theatre and watched Matilda - what a performance!! The children were absolutely mesmerised and inspired by the amazing acting. The following day we had excellent weather and headed to London Zoo. The children saw an array of animals and learnt interesting facts about each one. We also got to watch the animals being fed which was fascinating! We then headed back on the coach and made our way back to Leeds.
"I have never been to London before. It was amazing!" "My favourite part was Matilda because I want to be an actress when I grow up" "I have never done so many steps!!" "It was brilliant to go and visit London as it has a lot of amazing places to see. Buckingham palace was huge and my favourite place to see."
"It was an absolute pleasure to take year 6 to London and I have never een such well - behaved children. They were fascinated by everything they say and had so many questions to ask. The children have worked extremely hard this half term and the end of year residential waas the cherry on top of the cake. Well done Year 6!"

Y6 - Climate Change Warriors
Project Overview
This half term, Y6 have dived into their learning about global warming and climate change. They have enjoyed learning about real life issues and have used these to inspire their writing.
We began our learning by becoming experts on the causes of climate change and what we can do to stop global warming. We listened to Greta Thunberg's speeches and devised our own list of features to include in order to persuade the listener to care.
We held our very own COP 26 where pupils took on the roles of some of the world's leaders and debated how we can make a positive difference.
Following all our learning about persuasive writing, Y6 then wrote their own persuasive speeches about a subject matter that they are passionate about. These ranged from issues such as deforestation and animal rights to racism in football and sexism in sports.
"I found making the posters really fun." Y6 Child "I liked writing my own speech about racism in football." Y6 Child "I feel really bad about how we're treating our world but I loved making the posters to spread awareness." Y6 Child "It was really helpful when we held our own press conference and gathered quotes for our magazine articles." Y6 Child
"The children's care for the world around them has been evident during our learning this half term. They were so shocked by some of the statistics we discovered through our research and were genuinely angry about the fact that not enough has been done to fix the situation. It was amazing to watch their passion spill onto the pages as they wrote their own speeches. I was particularly impressed by the use of modal verbs (such as must, should, will) that the children used to persuade the listener in order to encourage the audience to act on what they were hearing. Some of the metaphors were incredible and I can honestly say, we have some real climate warriors in year 6. My favourite moment from this unit has to be the development in spoken language skills. Everyone has developed their confidence and engaged their audience when they read their speeches aloud. I am one very proud teacher." - Miss Jessop
This half term we have been on our very own adventure which has allowed us to visit several different places around the world. We started our learning in January looking at the change in season and we learnt about the different animals that live 'above' and 'under' the snow during the winter. We then looked at what our winter is like compared to winter in a contrasting country, like Antarctica. We particularly enjoyed watching David Attenborough's documentaries about the 'Frozen Planet'. During this time, we learnt how animals are able to keep themselves warm in Antarctica and we explored the purpose of 'blubber' using our scientific enquiry skills. We loved having the chance to create our own 'winter' themed documentaries, using the green screen to tie together all of our learning.
Following this, our learning then moved on to focus on the story 'The Snail and The Whale'. Using this story, we were able to learn about a range of other environments such as the jungle, the mountains, coral reefs and deserts. When focussing on this text, the children used their observational skills to paint animals from the story, collaged their own jungle landscapes, grouped and sorted animals into their correct environments, looked a different countries on a map and much, much more!
After learning about these new places, we then discovered that Miss Korenika is from Italy. We spent the final two weeks learning lots of information about Venice in Italy and we enjoyed reading the story 'The Glassmaker's Daughter'. We learnt how to sing in Italian, learnt how to make Pizza, visited an Italian restaurant, made our own mask for the Venice Carnival and explored the concept of mirroring.
We have also been fortunate to celebrate Chinese New Year this half term. Whilst celebrating, we attempted Chinese writing, made CNY lanterns, money wallets, animal masks and a large dragon head for dragon dancing. We looked at lots of Chinese artefacts, tried on traditional Chinese outfits and tasted Chinese food.
What an super half term we have had Reception, well done!
'I liked it when we learnt about polar bears. They have blubber on their skin'. - Reception child
'We know how to use the green screen to make our own movies'.- Reception child
'We made a big dragons and did dancing around the playground'.- Reception child
'I liked learning how to make yummy pizza. It was hot and cheesy'. - Reception child
'In Venice they have no cars. They have boats and gondolas'. - Reception child
It has been such a treat to see the children become so engaged within their learning this half term. The children have really impressed me with their ability to talk about what they have learnt and they have tried hard to use lots of new, and interesting vocabulary. The children found it particularly exciting that Miss Korenika was Italian, and they have been fascinated with learning lots about life in her home country. The children have made super progress this half term in all areas of their learning, and I am very proud of each and everyone of them.

Year 5 - Exploring Shackleton's Antarctica
In year 5, we have been learning all about Antarctica and Shackleton's journey to explore this continent. The children were intrigued to learn facts about Antarctica itself, such as the Ross Ice Shelf being the size of France and that polar bears do not live in Antarctica! With the use of secondary sources such as books, photos and videos, they also found the lengths that Shackleton went to to get to the South Pole inspiring. The learning included advertising for an explorer to join Shackleton on his exploration and drama to act out the stages of Shackleton's journey to Antarctica.
In addition to learning about Shackleton, children completed a writing unit about another likeminded explorer (Scott) and researched a variety of polar scientific careers which are undertaken, such as glaciologists, meteorologists and geologists.
Finally, we had an awesome explorer visit the year 5 children and talk to them about his journey to the South Pole. He gave details about every step - from raising money and finding the correct team for the trip, to the gory photos of getting severe frostbite and having to have surgery and rehabilitation, for months after, as a result of the exploration. A lucky member of year 5 was chosen to get dressed into the explorers hi-tech clothing, to see what he wore but also to try and give the children some perspective about how cold it actually is in Antarctica!
"I loved learning about the wildlife that live on Antarctica like the Emperor Penguins and the seals"- 5NH child "The explorer was amazing - he made me feel like I could achieve anything"- 5AO child "I liked pretending I was an explorer when we did our writing and that my feet got frostbite!" - 5NH child "I enjoyed learning about the Antarctica because there is nowhere else like it on Earth!" - 5AO child
The geography project over the last term has definitely engaed the children and given them a thirst for knowledge. They enjoyed the writing unit, as an explorer in the 1900s, as it gave them a sense of how difficult a task Shackleton and Scott had in those days. The icing on the cake for the pupils was having the explorer come in to school. They listened with curiosity and soaked up everything he had to say. - Miss Holmes, 5NH Class Teacher
