Year 3 history

Year 3- The Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Project Overview

In year 3 this half term we have been gaining knowledge all about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age.  Our overarching questions was to research whether trade was an important aspect of life during Prehistoric Britain. The children started by learning about The Stone Age and it’s 3 periods. The children learned about the transition from Nomad hunter gathers in the Paleolithic period into the Mesolithic and Neolithic with the start of farmers. They discovered during the Paleolithic period, there was no need for trade as people only cared about themselves and their chance of survival. Once farming began and people began to settle they started trading different things to survive. The children then discovered how the Bronze and Iron age came and how trade transformed even further. It started off locally and then people would travel to different regions in order to trade.

”There were hunters gathers and farmers. The hunters followed the pack and the gathers picked berries. The farmers grew their own crops and had animals on the farm to kill.”- Oscar Year 3

What skills were developed?

 

  • To know that people have lived in Britain for a long term.
  • Know that Britain used to be connected to Europe and that people came to Britain following herds of migrating animals in the Stone Age.
  • To understand the change between hunter gathers and farmers and know why the transition was needed.
  • To understand the impact of bronze and iron on the way people in Britain lived.
  • Researched the difference between historians and archaeologists and how their discoveries of the Stone Age was found.
  • To know how trade impacted the lives of people in Britain in Pre historic times.
  • To begin to understand a secure chronologically of British history.

Over the last half term, the children have thoroughly enjoyed our history topic of The Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. They explored each age and researched key chronological events. They enjoyed learning about trade and how this developed and transformed the different ages. They were true historians and archeologists.
