Forces
This half term, Year 5 have been learning about Forces. In our science lessons we have been looking at different types of forces such as gravity and friction. We have been looking at two types of friction – air resistance and water resistance.
The children have had the opportunity to carry out lots of fun and exciting experiments.
"I found out that objects that have a pointed end go faster in water and other shapes (circles and straight edges) go slower. This is because streamlined objects will break through the water easier than objects that are not. The force that is acting here is water resistance. We have also learnt about air resistance. We tried making parachutes for light and heavy objects to see which object fell faster from a height. We found out that the blue tac ball goes faster than a cotton ball because the blue tac ball is heavier."
The children have been beginning to take measurements and learning how to record them clearly. They have been able to make predictions and draw reasonable conclusions based on the evidence they have gathered from an investigation. Children have begun to understand different scientific discoveries and have used these to support their own hypothesis'. For example, when learning about Gravity, we learnt about Isaac Newton and used our knowledge of him to help form our predictions for our investigations.
"The children have loved learning about the different forces. They have used their prior knowledge to help them understand challenging concepts. In investigations, children have demonstrated a secure and confident understanding of Forces and have enjoyed the practical element of the topic."
