At Clapgate, history teaching is designed to inspire curiosity about the past while developing the essential skills pupils need to think like young historians. From the earliest years, children are taught key historical skills such as asking and answering questions, using evidence, understanding chronology, and recognising similarities and differences between periods and people.
Our carefully sequenced curriculum ensures that knowledge and skills build progressively across year groups, with important concepts revisited regularly to support long-term retrieval. Through engaging lessons, purposeful discussion, and opportunities to recall and apply prior learning, pupils strengthen their memory of significant events, people, and themes over time. This approach helps children not only remember what they have learned, but also make meaningful connections across history, deepening their understanding as they move through the school.
