Year 6 Design and Technology – Design and make a cushion
In Design and Technology year 6 have designed and made a cushion for their final textile project. They looked at a variety of cushion designs and considered the difference between a cushion and a pillow. They thought about any additional design features that their cushion may have like a pocket to hold small items or a handle to enable the cushion to be carried around. The children considered the colour scheme for their cushion and thought about different stitches that they could use to enhance their design. They practised and learnt how to do blanket stitch (an edging stitch) which was perfect for combining two pieces of fabric together. Finally, they thought about the ‘user’ (who the cushion was being made for). Was it for themselves, a member of their family or as a gift for a friend? We had some fantastic designs which were personal to the children and some cushions even had a design on the front and back! Year 6 worked really hard on this textile project and have made a lasting product which will make a lovely keepsake at the end of their primary school life.
